Objective & content
In this episode a pan is left on the stove, Tiago puts the fire out, and Diane, who comes in at that moment, says she has been "afraid of you" every night. Stella admits the pan was hers, Rodrigo defends Tiago, and Tiago goes to Neil's house for the night. The grammar focus is the past passive (was/were + past participle) used to say what happened without a doer, as in "The pan was left on." Vocabulary comes from family, feelings and the home. Learners practise listening for the events and the emotions, then retell the fire with and without the people.
Pedagogical guide
This is the emotional low point of the season, so keep the lesson on what people say and why fear can be stronger than proof, not on judging Diane or Tiago. Allow a short silence after the second listen and do not force personal sharing. The scene also contains the active past ("I left it on the heat"), which you can use on purpose to contrast active and passive.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Pre-listening: pairs say what can start a kitchen fire and who can be blamed when something goes wrong at home.
- (5 min) Vocabulary preview on the board: pan, lid, burn, gas, awake, scared.
- (5 min) First listen, no interruption: learners name the topic and sort it into "the fire" and "the argument".
- (10 min) Second listen with pauses at 0:50, 1:45 and 2:08: what Tiago did with the pan, why Diane is afraid, how Tiago feels.
- (5 min) Comprehension check: five questions, oral, written or in the in-app quiz.
- (4 min) Vocabulary practice: matching game or the vocabulary part of the student sheet.
- (8 min) Grammar focus: compare "The pan was left on" with the active sentence, then run the sentence-swap game.
- (5 min) Speaking: in pairs, retell the fire with the people, then in the passive, and discuss who was blamed.
- (3 min, optional) Writing: three passive sentences about an event where nobody says who did it.
