Teaching guide

Objective & content

George brings a new board to the park, tries a new trick with his friend Ollie watching, falls near the bench and gets straight back on. The episode teaches two points: the articles a, an and the (Is that an old saying?) and every + a day or time word for how often (We practise every Wednesday and Saturday now). The vocabulary field is sport and hobbies (trick, board, bench, helmet, practise). Learners listen for what happens in each attempt, then check understanding with the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

French un/une and Italian un/una never change with the next word, but English a/an depends on the sound, not the spelling, so pupils must listen for it (a new trick, an old saying). The taught point is frequency with every + a day or time word (every Wednesday and Saturday, every single week); always appears in the script too, but it is not the focus.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Ask how often they practise a sport or hobby; collect every day, every Saturday.
  2. (5 min) Introduce George and Ollie and preview trick, board, bench and helmet.
  3. (4 min) First listen: Does George fall near the bench? What does he try again?
  4. (8 min) Second listen with pauses after I'm trying a new trick today, the fall at the bench and Ollie's You're actually doing it!
  5. (7 min) Put a, an, the and every examples from the script on the board and say them aloud.
  6. (6 min) Pairs describe a skill they practise using an article and every.

Materials & prerequisites

The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the days of the week and the present simple.
