Objective & content
At the end of a day out in Bristol, George, Rosie, Paul and Kate sit on the harbour wall and each names the best thing about the day: the tower, a fossil in the museum, a hedgehog Kate has carried in a box, and Paul's chips. The episode teaches superlatives for recounting favourites, with the best, better than and older than, and the frame superlative plus in plus a place (the best view in Bristol, the quietest one in this family). The vocabulary field is a day out (tower, view, museum, fossil, hedgehog). Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The same frame is used with four different places, from a city to one family, so learners hear how the scope changes the phrase after the superlative. The irregular forms best and better need separate attention from the regular -est and -er forms. The hedgehog makes a good listening puzzle: pupils guess what is in the box.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Warm-up: go round the class with The best thing about this week was..., one sentence each.
- (7 min) First listen, books closed: what is in the box?
- (10 min) Second listen with the comprehension questions; pause after Not quite and let pupils guess what Kate will say.
- (10 min) Grammar: collect every superlative from the script and sort them into regular (-est) and irregular (best).
- (8 min) Vocabulary, then the round-the-group task: one best thing each from a shared trip, justified in a second sentence.
- (5 min) Wrap-up: pupils write their own favourite, as Paul does with the chips.
Materials & prerequisites
The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need short adjectives with -er and -est (episode 24 of this series).
