Objective & content
Eleni, George and Rosie's grandmother, teaches them koulourakia, a traditional butter biscuit from Cyprus, in the Walker kitchen. George cuts the butter, Rosie mixes, and a cloud of flour goes up when George stirs. The episode teaches the object pronouns it (one thing) and them (more than one), each replacing a noun just named (Mix them together, Rosie.). The vocabulary field is baking (butter, sugar, flour, bowl, oven, mix, stir, bake). Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
Each pronoun comes straight after the noun it replaces, so learners can always point back to it. English has one pronoun for a singular object and one for a plural object, whatever the gender, which is simpler than French, Italian or German; say so, then drill by asking "singular or plural?" before each choice.
Suggested procedure
- (8 min) Pre-listening: ask who has baked with a grandparent, meet Eleni, and preview recipe, mix, bake and traditional.
- (4 min) First listen: what are they making and where does the recipe come from?
- (8 min) Second listen with pauses: what do them (butter and sugar) and it (the flour) mean?
- (9 min) Comprehension check and vocabulary practice.
- (7 min) Grammar: sort the sentences from the script into an it column and a them column.
- (6 min) Speaking: in pairs, one gives a cooking instruction, the partner repeats it with the right pronoun.
