Objective & content
During a quiet lesson in the classroom, George asks Mr Brown for one thing after another: the toilet, water, the window, a chat with his friend, a pencil sharpener, even Buster at school. Some answers are yes, some are no. The episode teaches can for permission (Can I go to the toilet, please?, Yes, you can, No, you can't) and must for obligation (You must be quiet). The vocabulary is classroom requests: water, window, pencil, quiet, work. Learners listen for each request and its answer, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The requests escalate, so learners hear both permission and refusal with a reason, and see the difference between can (am I allowed?) and must (there is no choice). The typical error is Can I to go?, because French and Italian use an infinitive after the modal. German pupils separate permission from ability (dürfen and können) and may over-correct to may.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Warm-up: pupils say what they ask permission for in your room; write the nouns on the board (the toilet, water, the window, a pencil).
- (7 min) Teach the eight words, pointing at the real objects; teach sharpen as a gesture.
- (7 min) First listen: how many times does George ask, and does he get everything?
- (10 min) Second listen: pupils tick allowed or refused for each request, then explain what the refusals have in common.
- (8 min) Grammar focus: sort the episode's lines into a CAN column and a MUST column, and correct Can I to go?
- (8 min) Pupils ask you for three things with Can I ...?; in pairs, one plays the teacher and refuses at least once.
