Objective & content
George walks home from school with Ollie, a school friend who is not part of the family, and the two boys compare sport and hobbies until they race to the corner. The episode teaches adverbs of frequency with the present simple (I always play football on Saturdays) and frequency expressions at the end of the clause (Every Tuesday and every Saturday morning). The vocabulary field is sports, free time and weekly routine. Learners listen for who plays what and how often, then take the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
There are two systems in one lesson: adverbs go before the main verb, frequency expressions go at the end, and pupils often mix the positions. Introduce Ollie before the first listen so a third voice does not confuse them. Twice, not two times, needs to be on the board.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Write once, twice, three times a week on the board; pupils say how often they do a sport or hobby.
- (7 min) First listen, books closed: which sport does each boy play?
- (10 min) Second listen with the comprehension worksheet; pause after Every Tuesday and every Saturday morning and ask how many times a week that is.
- (10 min) Separate the two systems on the board: adverbs before the verb, expressions at the end.
- (8 min) Class survey: ask three classmates How often do you...? and report one answer in the third person.
- (5 min) Wrap-up: one sentence defending a hobby someone else finds boring.
Materials & prerequisites
The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the present simple and the days of the week.
Curriculum alignment
Cycle 4 (5e), axis "School and society": free-time activities and the weekly routine.
Possible adaptations
- Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
- Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
