Teaching guide

Objective & content

Rosie and her friend Priya sit down for lunch at school. They ask each other about the soup, the bread, the carrots and the sandwich, find that they like opposite things, and share their food. The episode teaches the present simple question and negative with do (Do you like the soup today?, I don't like tomato soup at all.) and the short answers Yes, I do and No, I don't. The vocabulary is food: soup, bread, carrot, tomato, sandwich, cheese. Learners listen for who likes what, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

Every question is about food on the girls' trays, so do in the question and do in the short answer are heard side by side. The auxiliary is the difficulty: French pupils answer Oui where English needs Yes, I do and may say Yes, I like. German pupils have no do-support either, and Italian pupils, whose verb piacere inverts the subject, may say Me like soup.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Warm-up: draw a happy and a sad face as two columns, add foods you like and dislike, and collect one food from each pupil.
  2. (7 min) Teach the six food words quickly; spend thirty seconds on the stress of tomato.
  3. (7 min) First listen: do Rosie and Priya like the same things?
  4. (10 min) Second listen: pupils fill a two-column table for Rosie and Priya, then say why it is a good lunch for both.
  5. (8 min) Grammar focus: circle do in the question and in the short answer; correct Yes, I like and I no like; add at all.
  6. (8 min) In pairs, each pupil finds three foods their partner likes and three they do not, asking only Do you like ...?
