Objective & content
On the first afternoon of school camp, Mr Brown tries to pitch the teachers' tent across the path and then beside the lake. George reads him the site rules and Ollie gives him advice, until his boots are in the wet ground. The episode teaches must (obligation), mustn't (prohibition) and should (advice) (You mustn't put your tent there. and You should put it next to ours, sir.). The vocabulary field is the camp site (tent, path, rules, lake, ground, boots). Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The boys read rules with must and mustn't and give their own ideas with should, so learners hear the difference between a rule and advice. Ask which lines come from the rules and which are the boys' own ideas. Stress that all three verbs are followed by the base verb without to.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Warm-up: pupils name three rules of their school; write them under We must... and We mustn't....
- (7 min) First listen, books closed: where does Mr Brown's tent go in the end?
- (10 min) Second listen with the comprehension questions; pause after I am not moving it again and let pupils predict what happens.
- (10 min) Grammar: three columns, must, mustn't and should; put every line from the script in one of them.
- (8 min) Vocabulary, then groups of three write four camp rules; one pupil plays the teacher who breaks them and the others advise with should.
- (5 min) Wrap-up: pupils write one rule for their own home, starting At home, you mustn't...
