Objective & content
The party Rosie has been planning finally happens in the Walker garden. Paul, Kate, George and Rosie talk while Priya, Maya and Lucas are there, George's biscuits nearly go to Buster, Rosie gets a bike, and everyone ends with cake. This is the finale of the party module, so it adds no new grammar and lets object pronouns come back in context: Try one of these biscuits, everyone. George made them. The vocabulary field is celebration (cake, biscuit, present, bike, wish, dance). Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The pronouns each replace a noun learners can see in the scene: them the biscuits, it the bike, one a single biscuit. A common habit is repeating the noun (George made the biscuits) even when the context already makes it clear, so swap noun for pronoun aloud with several lines from the script. German learners should also note that present has two senses in English.
Suggested procedure
- (8 min) Pre-listening: ask about the best party learners have been to, meet the family and preview cake, biscuit, present and wish.
- (4 min) First listen: where is the party and who is there?
- (8 min) Second listen with pauses: what does them mean, and what do you think the present is?
- (9 min) Comprehension check and vocabulary practice.
- (7 min) Grammar: fill a table of them, it and one with the noun each replaces.
- (6 min) Speaking: learners describe a party they went to, using at least one object pronoun.
