Teaching guide

Objective & content

George and Rosie spread their new timetables on the kitchen table and turn the comparison into a mock rivalry; it ends when George's tip about the music club helps Rosie. The episode teaches like / love / prefer + verb-ing for activities (Do you like having Maths first thing?) and keeps subject names as plain nouns (I prefer Art). The vocabulary field is school subjects, timetable, clubs and o'clock times, with one comparative (busier than yours) as support. Learners listen for who has which lesson when, then take the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

Pupils from French, Italian or German backgrounds reach for the infinitive after like (I like to play), so the -ing form needs repeated exposure across positive, negative and question forms. English subject names also take a capital letter, which the French ones do not.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Put the eight subject names on the board; pupils copy them with capitals and tick today's lessons.
  2. (7 min) First listen, books closed: who has the longer Wednesday?
  3. (10 min) Second listen with the comprehension worksheet; pause after Rosie's Wednesday and have pupils write her three subjects in order.
  4. (10 min) Collect every like / love / prefer example from the script and build the -ing pattern.
  5. (8 min) In pairs, compare real timetables and say what you prefer.
  6. (5 min) Wrap-up: one sentence about a club they would like to join and why.

Materials & prerequisites

The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the days of the week, o'clock times and the present simple.

Curriculum alignment

Cycle 4 (5e), axis "School and society": school subjects and the school day.

Possible adaptations

  • Lower levels: Offer segmented listening and additional visual aids.
  • Advanced levels: Encourage an oral summary and a debate in English on the theme.
  • Large groups: Organise group work with differentiated roles.
