Teaching guide

Objective & content

Rosie and her friend Amber do the Saturday shop for Rosie's dad. At Yvonne's stall they ask the prices, buy apples and tomatoes, and then the paper bag splits and they have to count the fruit back in. The episode teaches how much (a price: How much are the apples?) and how many (a number: How many do you want to buy?), with market and shopping vocabulary (market, stall, bag, pound). Learners listen for prices and quantities, work out that two pounds plus one pound makes three, and check their understanding with the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The shop transaction carries the grammar: the customer wants the price, the stallholder wants the number, so each question gets a concrete, countable answer from a different speaker. Pupils whose language has one word for both (French combien, Italian quanto) have never had to choose, so give them time on the distinction; German pupils split the same way English does and can spend that time on the shop phrases.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Warm-up: ask How much is it? about one pencil, How many are there? about a handful, and elicit the rule: how much for money, how many for a number.
  2. (8 min) Teach the market words from the pictures: market, stall, bag.
  3. (7 min) First listen: what did the girls buy, and what went wrong?
  4. (10 min) Second listen: pupils note every number, then explain why the total is three pounds.
  5. (8 min) Gap-fill four questions from the episode with how much or how many.
  6. (7 min) In pairs, buy something from a partner's stall: ask the price, say how many, pay.
