Objective & content
Rosie has saved twelve pounds for a scarf that costs twelve pounds fifty. Her mum Kate offers to lend her the fifty pence, but her purse is lost somewhere in her bag. The episode teaches how much for money and how many for things you can count (How many pockets does this bag have?), plus the price question How much is the blue scarf? The vocabulary field is money and shopping (pound, pence, coin, purse, save, lend). Learners listen for amounts and numbers, work out when Rosie will have enough, and check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
The scene sets money, which is uncountable, against pockets and times, which are countable, so the choice of question word is the whole point. Start with a sorting activity before the listening so that pupils have already decided which nouns take which word. Rosie's saving (three pounds a week) gives a simple sum to check comprehension.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Warm-up: two columns, money and things; pupils sort nouns such as water, coins, pockets and weeks.
- (7 min) First listen, books closed: does Rosie buy the scarf?
- (10 min) Second listen with the comprehension questions; pause after Exactly twelve pounds and ask how much is missing.
- (10 min) Grammar: collect every how much and how many from the script and put them in the two columns.
- (8 min) Vocabulary, then pairs: one is a shopkeeper with three priced items, the other has a fixed budget and must ask before choosing.
- (5 min) Wrap-up: pupils work out how long they would need to save for something they want.
