Teaching guide

Objective & content

George and Rosie sit on the sofa and describe the family. Dad is funny, Mum is kind, George is messy and loud, and Rosie insists she is calm and organised, not grumpy. Buster is never grumpy, only hungry. The episode teaches be with personality adjectives: the affirmative (You are messy.), the negative (I am not grumpy!) and the question (Is Buster grumpy too?). The vocabulary is character adjectives. Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

Be plus an adjective works much as it does in French, German and Italian, so the vocabulary is the main load. Watch the negative (I am not, never I not am) and the word order of the question (Are you ...?).

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Warm-up: ask pupils for three words that describe a friend and write them up.
  2. (2 min) Preview the adjectives (grumpy, kind, funny, messy, loud, calm).
  3. (4 min) First listen: who is called grumpy, and does she agree?
  4. (8 min) Second listen: pupils match each person to the adjectives they hear.
  5. (7 min) Board work: I am / I am not / Are you ...? with adjectives from the script.
  6. (6 min) Two truths about me: each pupil says two true sentences and one about a family member.

Materials & prerequisites
