Objective & content
At Sunday breakfast in the Walker kitchen, George wants paintballing or laser games, Rosie wants a museum, Paul would like to try a new restaurant and Kate would like a picnic. After some teasing they agree on Kate's picnic. The episode teaches want + to + verb for a direct wish (You always want to shoot something.) and would like for a politer preference (I'd like to try that new restaurant.), with the question Why do you want ...?. The vocabulary is leisure: museum, gallery, restaurant, picnic, sandwich, games. Learners listen for each person's idea, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
Four people each want something different, so pupils hear want and would like in natural contrast, and can ask which one Kate is using. The typical error is I want go: French vouloir and German wollen take no marker before the infinitive, so pupils drop to. Would like has no single-word equivalent in French, so teach I'd like to as one fixed chunk.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Warm-up: ask what pupils like to do at the weekend and brainstorm activities on the board.
- (5 min) Meet the family at breakfast and preview the six words.
- (4 min) First listen: how many people want to do something different?
- (8 min) Second listen with pauses: what does George always want, what does Rosie always want, why does Kate tease Paul, and is Kate's I'd like a picnic want or would like?
- (7 min) Grammar focus: two columns (want to and would like to) and a thumbs up or down drill (I want go is wrong, I want to go is right).
- (6 min) Pupils draw a weekend activity and tell a partner one want to and one would like to sentence; the partner guesses which is the direct wish.
