Objective & content
On a quiet evening, Rosie and her dad Paul talk about their hobbies. Rosie loves playing netball, likes playing the piano, does gymnastics on Mondays and sometimes goes swimming. Paul loves cooking and likes going for a run, and George loves only football. The episode teaches like, love and hate with a verb + -ing (I love playing netball.) and the activity verbs play, go and do (I go running., I do gymnastics.). The vocabulary is hobbies and sports. Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
French j'aime jouer and Italian mi piace giocare use the infinitive, while English needs -ing after love, like and hate: a new verb form to learn. Play, go and do are fixed pairs (play netball, go swimming, do gymnastics), so teach them as chunks.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Warm-up: ask what pupils love doing at the weekend and list the activities.
- (2 min) Preview the hobby words and the three verbs play, go and do.
- (4 min) First listen: who talks, and what do they love doing?
- (8 min) Second listen: pupils sort each activity under play, go or do.
- (7 min) Board work: love, like, hate + verb-ing; correct any infinitive after love or like.
- (6 min) Pairs ask What do you love doing? and report one answer.
Materials & prerequisites
The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the present simple with I and the names of common sports.
