Objective & content
George realises he has lost the pen he bought for his mum at the gift shop, and Ollie helps him retrace his steps through the gate, the great hall and the hilltop with a string of questions. The episode teaches past simple questions with a question word + did + base verb (Where did you go after the gift shop?), covering who, what, where, when, why and how. The vocabulary field is sightseeing (pen, pocket, jacket, armour). Learners listen for the clues, then check understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
French and German learners often leave out did and keep the word order of a statement (Where you went?). Hearing one question word after another, each with the same pattern, helps pupils feel the rhythm. The story is a mini investigation, so the questions have a clear purpose.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Ask pupils what they do when they lose something, and what questions a friend would ask.
- (5 min) Preview pen, pocket, jacket and armour with pictures.
- (4 min) First listen: what has George lost, and where does he find it?
- (8 min) Second listen with pauses after She's always losing her pens!, Just Mr. Brown and my other pocket.
- (7 min) Write question word + did + subject + base verb on the board, with one script example for each question word.
- (6 min) Pairs: one describes something they lost; the partner asks at least four did questions.
Materials & prerequisites
The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the affirmative past simple and the question words.
Curriculum alignment
