Teaching guide

Objective & content

George records a "Meet My Family" video for his penpal Tom in France. He introduces his sister Rosie, his dad Paul (a chef) and his mum Kate, and the family dog Buster turns up in Kate's bag. The episode teaches possessive adjectives and the genitive 's (This is my sister, Rosie., My dad is a chef.), with be for introductions (I'm Rosie, George's big sister.). The vocabulary is family members and pets. Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.

Pedagogical guide

The owner comes first in English: Rosie's phone, not the phone of Rosie. French, Italian and Spanish learners put the thing first and the owner last, so this reversed order is the point to drill. My, his and her also agree with the owner, not with the thing.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Warm-up: ask who is in pupils' families and write the family words on the board.
  2. (3 min) Introduce the four Walkers and Buster; preview the family words.
  3. (4 min) First listen: who does George introduce, and who is in the bag?
  4. (8 min) Second listen: pause after each person and ask Whose dad is this?
  5. (7 min) Board work: my, your, his, her and Rosie's / George's; check the owner comes first.
  6. (6 min) Pairs introduce a family member (real or invented): This is my ... Her name is ...
