Objective & content
At dinner, Kate asks George what he likes. He loves pasta, pizza and chips, likes apples and cheese, and hates broccoli and fish; he tries a little broccoli, and Buster, who likes everything except lemons, eats George's pasta. The episode teaches love, like and hate in the present simple with a food (I love pizza and chips.) and the question Do you like pasta? The vocabulary is food. Learners listen, then check their understanding with the in-app quiz.
Pedagogical guide
English will not let these verbs stand alone, so I love needs a noun, while French j'adore can stand on its own. A general plural takes -s (I like apples). Italian learners may lose track of who likes what, because Italian piacere reverses the subject, so fix the subject first.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Warm-up: write I love, I like, I hate in three columns and add one food under each.
- (7 min) Teach the food words, spending most time on broccoli and lemon.
- (7 min) First listen: what does Buster eat, and what will he not eat?
- (10 min) Second listen: pupils sort George's foods into the three columns.
- (8 min) Board work: I love ... with a real noun; check every verb has a noun; add Do you like ...?
- (8 min) In pairs, sort six foods and compare with Me too or I don't.
Materials & prerequisites
The episode in the PLAY app (audio, slideshow, text and quiz), a student sheet and a teacher sheet with the answer key. Learners need the present simple with I and common food words.
